Alex Iwobi Equals Shola Ameobi’s Premier League Appearance Record

Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has matched Shola Ameobi’s long-standing record of 298 Premier League appearances, cementing his place among Nigeria’s greatest exports to English football.

Alex Iwobi reached the landmark during his side’s 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium over the weekend. While the result was disappointing for the Cottagers, it was still a night that carried huge personal significance for Iwobi.

The Super Eagles star began his Premier League journey with Arsenal before moving to Everton and later Fulham, where his versatility has kept him in demand.

His ability to slot into midfield, operate on the flanks, or support the attack has ensured a steady presence in one of the world’s most competitive leagues.

For over a decade, Ameobi’s 298 appearances for Newcastle United set the benchmark for Nigerian players in the division. He became a cult figure at St James’ Park and the face of Nigerian consistency in the Premier League.

Behind the pair are other Super Eagles greats who left their mark. Nwankwo Kanu amassed 273 appearances across Arsenal, West Brom and Portsmouth. Yakubu Aiyegbeni played 252 matches for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton and Blackburn, while Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel featured 249 times.

With Iwobi still active and in his prime, the record is now within his grasp. Just one more appearance after the international break will see him stand alone at the top.
