President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has submitted the name of Professor Joash Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), to the Senate for confirmation as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to a letter read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, President Tinubu described Amupitan as a highly qualified individual for the position. The President requested the Senate to expedite the confirmation process, citing the need for a smooth transition at the electoral body.

The Senate has referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for consideration. Amupitan’s confirmation would mark a new chapter in the leadership of INEC, which plays a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s electoral landscape.

In a related development, President Tinubu has also nominated Hon. (Mrs) Ayo Omidiran as the new Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), along with 28 others as Federal Commissioners. The Senate has referred these nominations to the Committee on Establishment and Inter-governmental Affairs for consideration and report within two weeks.
