Fire Service Launches Task Force On Building Safety Compliance

Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Samuel Olumode

The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Samue Olumode, on Tuesday inaugurated the special Task Force on public and private building audit to curb rising cases of fire disasters and strengthen national safety standards.

The inauguration, themed “Strengthening Fire Safety Compliance in Public Buildings: A Call to Action for National Resilience,” is aimed at risk management and prevention of fire incidents across the country.

Addressing senior officers and stakeholders at the event, Controller General Olumode, expressed concern over the increasing frequency of fire outbreaks in major cities, while citing the recent Afritower inferno in Lagos and several plaza fires in Abuja as warning signs demanding urgent intervention.

“The surge in fire incidents is a wake-up call. We can no longer afford to treat fire safety as optional. It is not a choice but a shared responsibility,” he said.

He explained that the newly inaugurated Task Force has been mandated to map and classify all public buildings nationwide according to their fire risk levels, inspect facilities to determine compliance with fire safety regulations, and provide comprehensive recommendations to guide enforcement actions and national policy decisions.

Adeyemi reaffirmed the Service’s unwavering resolve to safeguard lives, property, and critical infrastructure, stressing that compliance with fire codes is essential to national resilience.

“Our goal is simple — to prevent loss before it happens. We are instituting a culture of accountability and preparedness in every public and private establishment,” he added.

The Special Task Force is chaired by Assistant Controller General (ACG) Bolarinde Tajudeen Muhammed, who heads the Inspection, Investigation, and Enforcement (I.I.E.) Department.

Other members include the Deputy Controller of Operations (FCT Command), Provost Marshal, National Public Relations Officer, and Legal Director, who will serve as the Secretariat.

While declaring the Task Force officially inaugurated, the CG fire charged members to approach their duties with professionalism, integrity, and diligence, emphasizing that their work will directly impact the safety of millions of Nigerians.

He also appealed to owners and managers of public, private, and high-rise buildings to cooperate fully with the Task Force during the nationwide audit exercise.
