We Are Not Responsible For FESTAC Demolitions—Lagos Govt

Building Demolition

The Lagos State Government has denied involvement in the recent demolition of buildings in FESTAC Town, Lagos, saying the exercise was not carried out by any of its agencies.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, made this clarification on Tuesday at Alausa, Ikeja.

Olumide said contrary to speculation on social media, the state government had no hand in the demolitions, stressing that Lagos operates a transparent and well-defined procedure for any removal of structures.

He explained that the process involves the issuance of statutory notices and meaningful engagement with affected stakeholders before any demolition is executed.

The commissioner further urged all agencies operating in Lagos, including federal agencies, to always consult and obtain clearance from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development before carrying out any demolition activity in the state.

“We want to assure residents that the Lagos State Government remains committed to fairness, due process, and the protection of property rights. Any demolitions carried out without proper authorisation do not reflect the position or practice of this administration,” he stated, according to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mukaila Sanusi.

THE WHISTLER reports that a demolition exercise was recently conducted by the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) at 6th Avenue in FESTAC Town.

Over the weekend, more than 15 buildings were reportedly demolished along 6th Avenue, leaving traders and shop owners in shock and confusion as bulldozers tore through one structure after another.
