She opened up about how emotional the moment was in a follow-up Instagram Story. She wrote:

“I’ve been too afraid to do this for way too long! But this morning I woke up and said enough! This has been a long time coming!” She admitted that she was scared and said that sharing was “probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done.”

Her brother Peter Nyong’o also responded to her post with love emojis, writing.

“My family.” Zawadi’s announcement is important for her journey and for LGBTQ+ visibility in Kenya, where being part of the community can be difficult both legally and socially.

Her honesty has sent a strong message of bravery and support because, for one, she is a public figure and part of a well-known family.
