Rafa Benítez Becomes Panathinaikos’ Head Coach

Spanish tactician, Rafa Benítez has been announced as the new head coach of Panathinaikos FC, sealing a return to management nearly two years after leaving Spanish side Celta Vigo.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on Friday, writing, “Rafa Benítez signs in as new Panathinaikos head coach, agreement sealed today with the Spanish manager.”

According to reports from Greek and international media, the 65-year-old Spaniard has agreed to a two-and-a-half-year contract that ranks among the most lucrative in Greek football history. The deal marks Benítez’s 17th managerial job and his first since departing Celta Vigo in 2024.

Panathinaikos are currently seventh in the 14-team Super League Greece, with nine points from six games. They sit eight points behind leaders PAOK but have a game in hand. The club hopes Benítez’s arrival will ignite a turnaround as they push to rejoin the title race.

Benítez brings a wealth of experience, having managed elite clubs across Europe, including Valencia, Napoli, Real Madrid, and Newcastle United.

The Spanish tactician remains best known for his remarkable triumph with Liverpool in the 2005 UEFA Champions League, when his team overturned a 3-0 halftime deficit to defeat Italian Serie A giants, AC Milan in Istanbul.
