October 28, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has uncovered and dismantled an illegal firearms fabrication factory in Itam Village, Itu Local Government Area, arresting two suspected gunsmiths in the process.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said the operation was carried out on Thursday, October 24, 2025, following credible intelligence that 39-year-old Aniekan Aniedi was producing and distributing locally made firearms to armed robbers and cultists across the state.
During the intelligence-led raid conducted around 6:57 p.m., police operatives apprehended Aniedi and his alleged accomplice, 35-year-old Ubong Udofia, at the illegal workshop.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of several fabricated weapons and materials used in gun production, including three locally made firearms, five metal pipes, two iron rods, assorted copper wires, and two flat metals designed for firearm fabrication.
Also recovered were a welding machine, an electric screwdriver, and an electric filing machine used in the manufacturing process.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, fsi, commended the operatives for their swift and effective action, describing the raid as “a major blow to the illicit arms supply chain fueling violence and criminality in the state.”
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to public safety and urged residents to report suspicious activities, assuring that all information received would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
DSP John added that investigations are ongoing to uncover the suspects’ network, identify their clients, and determine possible links to other criminal operations. She confirmed that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
