Inter Milan’s second-choice keeper, Josep Martinez, was involved in a car accident that killed an 81-year-old man in an electric wheelchair on Tuesday.
It happened at around 9:40 am local time Via Bergamo in Fenegrò, in the province of Como, near Inter’s training centre Appiano Gentile, according to reports.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene despite the prompt arrival of an ambulance and an air ambulance.
Police are carrying out investigations to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident.
According to reports in Italy, the elderly man may have suffered a sudden illness and veered into the lane where Martinez was driving.
The Nerazzurri goalkeeper immediately stopped and provided first aid to the man.
Following the tragic news and as a sign of mourning, Inter decided to cancel Cristian Chivu’s press conference, which was scheduled for 14:00 CET today.
Since joining Inter from fellow Serie A side Genoa in 2024, the Spaniard has made 12 appearances for the club. Martinez came through at Las Palmas after spending time in Barcelona’s famous academy, La Masia.
The 27-year-old moved to RB Leipzig in 2020 before signing for Genoa two years later. Martinez has played two games this season, the first of which was 2-1 win at home to Sassuolo before a 2-0 victory away to Cagliari.
He also played 90 minutes in Inter’s recent friendly with Atletico Madrid during the international break. The match was played in Libya.
Inter Milan will be in action against Fiorentina at the San Siro on Wednesday.
