Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu is set to miss the chance to officially cap-tie himself to Nigeria, with his participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) now off the table due to injury concerns.
The 26-year-old, who previously represented Germany at U21 level, has been sidelined since suffering a syndesmosis ligament injury during Werder Bremen’s 1-0 win over FC St. Pauli in early October. He has yet to make his competitive debut for the Super Eagles.
Long-term layoff rules out AFCON return
Agu missed Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho and Benin, fixtures that would have officially committed him to the national team.
His chances of featuring in the upcoming playoff clash with Gabon on November 13 have also been ruled out.

Werder Bremen’s head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer, confirmed that Agu’s comeback won’t happen this year, making his potential AFCON 2025 appearance officially off.
“His return will definitely not take place until the new year,” Niemeyer told DeichStube, adding that the exact timeline for the defender’s full recovery remains uncertain.
Recovery continues in Bremen
After undergoing surgery in Berlin, Agu spent the first two weeks of his rehabilitation there before returning to Bremen to continue treatment under the club’s medical supervision.
“He had surgery in Berlin and also spent the first two weeks of his rehabilitation there,” Niemeyer explained.
With early 2026 now identified as the earliest possible return date, Agu’s AFCON 2025 absence is confirmed, delaying his long-anticipated competitive debut and official commitment to the Super Eagles.
