Lagos Speaker, Obasa’s son confirmed as substantive Agege LGA chairman

Lagos Speaker, Obasa’s son confirmed as substantive Agege LGA chairman

Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been confirmed as the substantive chairman of Agege local government.

His confirmation followed the resignation of Tunde Azeez, the former council chairman, who stepped down over persistent health challenges.

Azeez went on medical leave less than a month after his administration was inaugurated on July 27, 2025.

His resignation letter was read by Adeshina Haruna, leader of the house, during plenary at the Agege council chamber.

Lawmakers unanimously voted to confirm Abdul-Ganiyu, who had been serving in an acting capacity since Azeez went on leave.

Abdul-Ganiyu had previously indicated interest in contesting the chairmanship ahead of the 2025 local government elections.

He was, however, initially dropped following opposition to his candidacy.

Legislators said the confirmation was necessary to prevent a leadership vacuum and sustain ongoing administrative work in the council.

They commended Azeez for his service and wished him a full recovery.

Abdul-Ganiyu, in his acceptance remarks, pledged to consolidate ongoing initiatives and strengthen collaboration with community stakeholders.

He said his focus would be on enhancing service delivery and stability in Agege.

During the plenary, council members also reviewed committee structures and oversight functions.

They emphasised the need for improved transparency, accountability and monitoring of developmental projects.
