The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC ) has celebrated a Kano-based volunteer, Mr Nura Abdullahi, for handing back more than N20 million left behind in a commercial tricycle.
Volunteer praised for rare act of honesty amid economic hardship
The corps described his conduct as an outstanding show of integrity at a time many Nigerians are facing economic pressure.
On Friday in Kano, ACG Amos Abiodun-Taiwo, the Commander of NSCDC Zone 12, presented Abdullahi with a formal commendation letter.
He said the gesture followed approval from the Commandant-General, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, after the incident was confirmed by the corps.
Commander says Abdullahi acted with ‘remarkable integrity’
“This young man is a good ambassador of his family, the NSCDC, and the entire country. If this were a negative incident, social media would have been flooded with it. Positive actions like this deserve just as much attention,” Abiodun-Taiwo stated.
Abdullahi came across the money after a fellow passenger, identified as Alhaji Mustafa from Katsina, unknowingly left his bag inside the tricycle. Having earlier borrowed Abdullahi his phone, the volunteer later used the most recent dialled number to reach him and ensure the cash was returned intact.
The commander pointed out that Abdullahi’s honesty stood out even more because he is not a permanent NSCDC officer but a volunteer, and reportedly had less than N20,000 in his account at the time.
He noted that returning such a huge amount is uncommon, especially given the current financial challenges in the country.
Abiodun-Taiwo encouraged Nigerians, particularly young people, to uphold similar values, saying moral discipline remains crucial.
He added that Abdullahi would be “well rewarded” for his upright behaviour, stressing that choosing the right path ultimately brings peace of mind.
