Oyo Court Clears PDP To Hold National Convention, Police Assures Adequate Security

November 15, (THEWILL) — An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has reaffirmed its earlier directive permitting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to proceed with its 2025 Elective National Convention scheduled for Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16, at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba.

Delivering the ruling on Friday, Justice Ladiran Akintola considered arguments from all parties, including counsel representing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He restated the court’s interim order of November 3, which compels INEC to attend, monitor and observe the convention in line with statutory requirements.

The defendants in the suit include the PDP as the 1st defendant; its Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagun (2nd defendant); and Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who serves as Chairman of the PDP Convention Organising Committee (3rd defendant). INEC is listed as the 4th defendant.

The decision comes despite a previous order by a Federal High Court in Abuja restraining the party from holding the convention.

Justice Peter Lifu had issued the order following a suit filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who alleged that he was “unlawfully and illegally denied” access to nomination forms required to contest the position of national chairman at the Ibadan convention.

Meanwhile, as delegates from across the country arrive in Ibadan, the Oyo State Police Command has assured residents of robust security throughout the exercise.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, the command said it is working closely with other security agencies to ensure a safe, hitch-free and peaceful convention.

Osifeso disclosed that the security plan includes intensified patrols, increased surveillance and intelligence-driven stop-and-search operations across strategic locations in the state.

Security presence will also be heightened at all entry and exit points, particularly around the convention venue, while public facilities such as parks, train stations and the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport will witness increased monitoring to forestall any security breach.

Residents and motorists were advised to consider alternative routes around Adamasingba during the two-day event to ease potential traffic disruptions.

The command further warned against unauthorised gatherings, protests or any action capable of breaching public peace before, during or after the convention.

Osifeso urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security personnel deployed across the state.

He encouraged residents to promptly report suspicious activities or movements to the nearest police formation or designated emergency lines.
