‘No more impunity’: Turaki vows to rebuild PDP, restore power to the people

Newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, used his acceptance speech to reassure party members that the trust they have placed in him “will not be taken for granted.”

Turaki clinched the chairmanship at the PDP’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where delegates from 17 states gathered to elect new national officers.

He pledged to fully deliver on the mandate handed to him.

Reflecting on the PDP’s journey over the years, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria noted, “Today, as I talk to you, the only political party that has retained its name is the Peoples Democratic Party.” He attributed this endurance to the party’s deep roots among ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, “This has been possible because this is the party for the Nigerian people. Make no mistake about it; we are returning the party to you, the people. There will be no more impunity.”

Turaki, a former minister, emphasized that under his leadership, the party would listen more closely to the public and respond to their expectations. He also promised to mend internal rifts by engaging members who have left the party.
“We will appeal to you to come back because the task ahead of us is saving Nigerian democracy, saving Nigeria from the precipice,” he said.

He added that the PDP would soon unveil its guiding principles as the new leadership begins its work in earnest.
