Abia Assembly to Tinubu: Grant Nnamdi Kanu Unconditional Release for South-East Peace

The Abia State House of Assembly has sent an open letter signed by all 24 members, including the Speaker, to President Bola Tinubu, appealing for the immediate and unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a resolution passed on November 10 and formally forwarded to the President, the lawmakers urged Tinubu to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to invoke Section 174(c) of the 1999 Constitution and enter a nolle prosequi, thereby discontinuing the terrorism charges against Kanu before judgment is delivered.

Describing Kanu’s continued detention as a “matter of urgent public importance,” the House argued that his release would serve as a powerful gesture of goodwill, foster lasting peace, promote stability, and advance national reconciliation in the South-East region.

The resolution, moved by Deputy Speaker Austin Meregini (Umuahia East), cited the recent presidential pardon granted to others as a precedent for compassionate political intervention.

The lawmakers also recounted Kanu’s detention history: his 2015 arrest, over two years in custody, bail in 2017, the 2017 military raid on his home that reportedly led to deaths, his subsequent flight abroad, and his controversial 2021 rendition from Kenya, which the Assembly described as a violation of his rights and international law.

In a separate development, Kanu has slammed a N50 billion fundamental rights lawsuit against the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and nine doctors over what he claims is a falsified medical report submitted in his ongoing terrorism trial.

Filed on November 12 at the FCT High Court (Suit No. CV/4584/25) by his lawyer Maxwell Opara, the suit accuses the NMA President, Dr Bala Audi, and the medical team of deliberately declaring him fit to stand trial despite his deteriorating health.

Kanu is seeking an order compelling the NMA to constitute a fresh, independent panel of specialists with no ties to the Federal Government to examine him properly.

Last month, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court Abuja relied on the disputed report to rule that Kanu was medically fit to continue facing the seven-count terrorism charge brought by the Federal Government over his broadcasts allegedly inciting violence in the South-East.

The IPOB leader has been held by the Department of State Services (DSS) since his rearrest and extradition in June 2021.
