One of the schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Kebbi, on Sunday has escaped and returned home.
According to the Associated Press (AP), the school principal, Musa Rabi Magaji, said the girl broke free minutes after the attack. He added that another student, who was not among the 25 confirmed abducted, also managed to escape shortly after the gunmen struck.
“One is part of the 25 abducted, and the other one returned earlier,” Magaji said.
“They are safe and sound.”
Recall that it was earlier reported that the bandits killed the school’s vice principal and that several unidentified bodies were found within the school premises.
“They came in mass numbers at night and began shooting sporadically before they gained access to the school,” a source had said.
Reacting, the Federal government, through the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that protecting Nigerians, especially schoolchildren, remains a solemn duty of the State.
He condemned the attack, describing it as a “reprehensible assault on innocent students” and the killing of school officials who were carrying out their lawful duties.
Idris said security and intelligence agencies have been ordered to immediately locate and rescue the abducted students and ensure the attackers face the full weight of the law.
He added that the Federal Government is strengthening internal security by upgrading military, policing, and intelligence capabilities, while expanding regional cooperation with ECOWAS, the AU, and the Multinational Joint Task Force to dismantle terrorist networks across West and Central Africa.
Also responding, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Waidi Shaibu, directed troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA to intensify the search-and-rescue mission. During his visit to Kebbi on Monday, he ordered round-the-clock operations until the schoolgirls are recovered.
International organisations, including UNICEF, have condemned the attack, urging swift action to protect schools and ensure the safe return of the abducted children.
