The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, remains a full member of the ruling party despite claims of his suspension at the state level.
In a letter dated November 17 and signed by the APC National Secretary, Dr Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, the party stated that the National Working Committee (NWC) had not deliberated on or investigated any allegation of anti-party activities against the senator as required by the party’s constitution.
Naija News reports that the clarification followed an enquiry by MJS Law Firm, led by Prof Yemi Oke, SAN, which gave the party a seven-day ultimatum to provide official documents supporting Daniel’s purported suspension.
Oke said the national leadership responded two days before the deadline, affirming Daniel’s standing in the party.
“The national leadership replied before the ultimatum elapsed, confirming that Senator Daniel remains a bona fide member of the APC,” Oke said in a statement on Wednesday.
In the letter to the law firm, Basiru stated that the NWC had not taken any position on the Ogun APC’s actions.
He wrote: “Please take note that the NWC is yet to deliberate on this matter as provided in Articles 21.3(d & e) of the party constitution.
Consequent upon this, you are hereby requested to allow the National Working Committee to investigate the matter and take an informed decision… Until then, Sen. Otunba Olugbenga Daniel remains a bona fide member of the party.”
The Ogun APC had recently insisted that Daniel’s suspension was valid. The party’s Director of Publicity, Femi Nuberu, said the senator was sanctioned for alleged anti-party activities during the Remo Federal Constituency by-election in August.
Nuberu said due process was followed, adding that the appeal window had closed.
“The party’s decision on this matter stands. The window to appeal… has lapsed. If the Daniel wailers want to wail, that’s their right,” he said.
Naija News reports that Nuberu’s remarks came after some APC leaders from Ogun East condemned the suspension during a briefing at Daniel’s Asoludero residence in Sagamu GRA.
They alleged that the move was politically motivated and part of a plot to edge Daniel out of the 2027 senatorial ticket.
They also criticised the state chapter for failing to serve Daniel an official suspension letter, relying instead on media statements.
Responding to the national leadership’s letter, Oke commended the APC’s fairness in addressing the matter, adding that the senator would remain law-abiding.
“We welcome the decision of the NWC to look into the issues thoroughly. Our client will continue to contribute to the progress of the party in Ogun State,” he said.
