Reps minority caucus demands immediate release of Kebbi schoolgirls

The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives on Wednesday urged the Federal Government, Kebbi State Government, and all security agencies to immediately secure the release of 25 schoolgirls abducted by bandits in the state.

Armed men on Monday attacked the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State and abducted 25 students.

They also killed a staff member in the incident that occurred at about 4:00 a.m. in the area.

In a statement in Abuja, the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, described the incident as heartbreaking.

He likened the attack to the June 17, 2021, abduction of about 80 students and the killing of five teachers at Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri, also in Kebbi State.

“The severity of this banditry affects the psychology, health, and security of the girls, their families, teachers, and the education sector.

“Speedy action to secure their release is paramount,” Chinda said.

He urged the security agencies to collaborate in rescuing the girls safely and arresting the perpetrators for prosecution.

He also expressed concern over rising insecurity nationwide, citing recent attacks in Eruku, Kwara, and other states, including Zamfara, Kogi, Kano, Benue, and Plateau.

“As responsible lawmakers, we will pursue legislative measures where necessary to address these security challenges and protect citizens,” Chinda stated.
