The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, for attributing recent terrorist attacks in Kebbi and Kwara States to remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described Akume’s comments as an “amateurish deflection” and a “shameless attempt” by the APC-led Federal Government to evade accountability.
The ADC said it found Akume’s position “bizarre” and utterly detached from Nigeria’s security realities.
The statement read, “We find it quite appalling that the APC-led Federal Government now claims its security failures are caused by a tweet by the President of another country.
“This is a shameful abdication of responsibility, a confirmation that the Tinubu government is overwhelmed by the security situation in the country and is clueless how to go about solving it.”
The ADC said Nigerians have endured years of worsening insecurity, including mass abductions, killings, and attacks on schools and places of worship, noting that conditions have deteriorated further under the current administration.
“It is therefore disingenuous to blame one tweet for the state of insecurity in Nigeria.
“Those killing Nigerians did not need to be instigated by Trump; they were already actively encouraged by a government that consistently fails to act decisively to stop the carnage,” the statement continued.
The party accused the Federal Government of “celebrating its electoral victory” while the country “is turned to a killing field.”
The ADC questioned how a government that claims to pride itself on sovereignty could attribute its internal security breakdown to the comments of a foreign leader.
“Are we so vulnerable that a social media post from Washington can easily turn our country upside down?” the party asked.
It challenged the government to reveal what threat evaluation or mitigation strategies it put in place if it genuinely believed Trump’s comments posed a security risk.
“This is what any serious government would do. It would not just wait for these opportunistic attacks to start shopping for who to blame for its incompetence,” Abdullahi stated.
The ADC insisted that the real cause of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity lies in what it called the “domestic negligence and incompetence” of the Tinubu-led administration.
The statement added, “There is no doubt about this, Nigeria is under siege because of the Tinubu-led APC government’s domestic negligence and incompetence rather than President Trump’s social media post.”
