Lagos Assembly passes University of Medicine Bill into law

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed the University of Medicine and Health Sciences Bill after completing its third and final reading on Thursday, November 20, 2025.

The legislation marks a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen the country’s health system, as it is expected to expand the training of medical professionals and enhance Nigeria’s capacity for homegrown research and innovation.

Key lawmakers, including Adams Noheem, Mojeed Fatai, and Richard Kasunmu, participated in the concluding deliberations before the bill was approved for transmission to the governor for assent.

However, the session unfolded against the backdrop of mounting national insecurity. Members of the Assembly condemned the surge in violent incidents across the country and observed a minute’s silence in honour of recent victims.

Speaker Mudasiru Obasa expressed deep concern over the killing of a serving Army General, describing the attack as a troubling indication of the country’s worsening security climate.

Legislators also highlighted the rising trend of kidnappings, drawing attention to a recent abduction case in Kebbi State, and appealed to both the state government and security agencies to expedite efforts to rescue the kidnapped children and reunite them with their families.

They condemned the attack inside a church in Kwara State, noting that such tragedies illustrate the growing risks faced by citizens, even within places traditionally regarded as safe.

The Assembly resolved to formally communicate its concerns to the Lagos State Government and military authorities, urging more decisive action to address the escalating security challenges.
