Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara have cited insecurity and lack of protection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership as reasons for their defections.
Adeleke, who joined the Accord Party on Tuesday, said his decision was necessary to safeguard his personal security and ensure continuity in Osun’s governance. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, he insisted that he still holds the PDP in high regard but had to prioritize stability.
“It’s not true that I abandoned PDP. I love PDP, but I have to protect myself and my state because of the good work we’ve been doing,” Adeleke said.
He secured Accord’s governorship ticket on Wednesday and expressed confidence that his performance in office would earn him re-election in 2026, despite contesting under a less prominent platform.
In Rivers State, Governor Fubara announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the PDP of failing to shield him during prolonged political battles. He said the party abandoned him at critical moments, leaving him vulnerable.
“I was left alone to fight battles that should have been resolved by the party. The PDP did not protect me, and I had to seek refuge where my mandate and security could be guaranteed,” Fubara stated.
Both governors’ exits add to the growing list of high-profile PDP members leaving amid deepening internal disputes. The party currently operates under rival national leaderships, with factions loyal to different power blocs.
