She shared a screenshot of her daughter’s results as she hoped to get clarity especially on the performance level.

How are points awarded under KJSEA? “Duke, this is my daughter. I don’t understand,” she wrote, expressing confusion about her daughter’s grade as seen in the shared screenshot. The parent wanted help interpreting the new grading system as Kenya transitions from the traditional Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) model.

While the subject codes and names were clear, the performance levels confused her. The results did not show marks or traditional grades, making it difficult for her to interpret her daughter’s performance.

The KJSEA used an eight-level achievement system, with points awarded based on a learner’s performance.

How does KJSEA grading system work? The categories include Exceeding Expectations (EE), Meeting Expectations (ME), Approaching Expectations (AE), and Below Expectations (BE).

BE carries one to two points, while EE carries seven to eight points depending on the achievement level.

Her daughter scored one EE achievement level one, five EE achievement level two, and two ME achievement level one.

Her overall performance was strong. Agriculture was her best subject, while English, Christian Religious Education (CRE), Creative Arts and Sports, Social Studies, and Integrated Science followed closely as her next best subjects.

Netizens react to girl’s KJSEA results Social media users reacted to the post, sharing encouragement and clarifying the child’s results:

Tr Moses Wanyonyi:

“EE1 (Exceeding Expectations) is equivalent to 90%–100%. Pure category 1, just like a strong A in the 8-4-4 system. EE2 is 80%–90%, equivalent to a weaker A. Hope you now understand.” Gregory Waithaka Ole Moita:

“Huyu ako sawa sana… expect akuwe placed kwa extra county school.” Patrick Chemwaita:

“Congratulations to her. She has performed well.” Frances Masaba:

“Excellent results. The child will be placed in C1 category.” Christine Lucaso:

“Mtoi ako sawa. Kuna EE_exceeding expectation, ME_meeting expectation, AE_approaching expectation, BE_below expectation. Ukijua hizo, utajua kiwango cha mtoto bila kuwekewa marks per learning area. Huyo ako na EE na ME, ako sawa.” Fadhili Jambeni:

“Sema tu unatangaza results za msichana wako. Nation and Standard hata kama hawajatangaza, wewe umetangaza.” Matias Jared:

“You should thank God for the good work your child has shown. Very marvelous.” Brian Mushivoji:

“Mtoto amepita, what are you not understanding? Yawa parents poh.” Businesswoman and mum Wanja Nyarari poses for photos. Photo: Wanja Nyarari.
