KENYA: Over 800 KCSE examiners strike over delayed allowances

The examiners claimed the government has failed to pay their coordination allowance, which they say should have been disbursed immediately the exercise.

How much allowances do examiners demand? An agriculture Paper 2 examiner, who spoke anonymously with TUKO.co.ke, confirmed that only “out-of-pocket” allowances had been issued.

“We were only given out-of-pocket, not fare nor advance. The Physics examiners left last week without any pay. Agriculture Paper 1 examiners were paid yesterday at 9.30 am, while ours came earlier today morning. Out-of-pocket was KSh 5,000 for all examiners. Advance was not paid, and they said fare will be sent next week, but we do not know whether they will come together or not,” the teacher said. An English Paper II examiner also confirmed that their colleagues marking English Paper III at the same centre had raised similar concerns.

“They were about to complete marking. The amount was to be paid immediately after coordination but it was not honoured. The out-of-pocket and coordination currently amounts to KSh 5,000,” he said, adding that his centre had not begun demonstrations. The examiners, who began marking three weeks ago were scheduled to continue throughout the week, vowed not to resume marking until the allowances are paid.
