Hope is gradually rising for the future of South Korea’s astronaut programme.

This development comes as the Korea Institute for Astronauts (KIFA) organised a one-day forum tagged “Exploration, Astronaut, and Space Industries”, aimed at strengthening and redefining the future of Korea’s astronaut journey.

The forum, held at Kookmin University, Seoul, brought together scholars and experts in space exploration to deliberate on key areas affecting astronaut development.

Speaking at the event, the Director of the Korea Institute for Astronauts (KIFA), David Kim, said the forum was designed to explore diverse approaches that would ensure balance and sustainability in Korea’s astronaut future.

“The very important point for this programme is as KIFA, the Korea Institute For Astronauts, hosting this one day forum, we actually introduce the research area we are conducting in Seoul, which include the space policy, astronaut selection, astronaut training, management, space biology and space medicine, also space education, also space suit and space design.

“It’s a very broad area where the life of an astronaut in space can be more good in a well-being perspective. So that is the main reason or purpose of this KIFA Institute,” he said.

Kim expressed optimism that the future of Korea’s astronauts would flourish through the activities of KIFA.

” So through this KIFA activity, we’d love to see the first Korean astronaut in the very near future. Then we can be able to send to the space, to the moon, and in the long term to Mars.”

Other speakers at the forum included Prof. Tu Hwan Kim, Director Founder of Korea Astronomy and Space; Prof. Kyu-Sung Kim, President, National Association for Space Medicine (NASM); and Prof. Emmanuel Wolfs, among others.
