AFCON 2025: Super Eagles defeat Tanzania 2–1 in winning start

Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on a winning note, digging deep to secure a hard-fought 2–1 victory over a determined Tanzanian side on Tuesday night.

It was not a stroll in the park at the Fez Stadium, but Nigeria showed character and composure when it mattered most. Defender Semi Ajayi set the tone with a crucial opener, rising above his markers to put the Super Eagles in front and ease early nerves in the Group C clash.

Tanzania, however, refused to roll over, pressing with intensity and testing Nigeria’s backline with swift counterattacks. Their resilience kept the contest alive and ensured the Super Eagles had to fight for every inch of space on the pitch.

The breakthrough Nigeria needed eventually came through Ademola Lookman, whose well-taken strike restored control and proved decisive. His goal underlined Nigeria’s attacking quality and provided the cushion needed to see out a tense encounter.

Despite late pressure from Tanzania, the Super Eagles held firm, managing the game intelligently to secure all three points and a confidence-boosting start to their AFCON journey.

With goals from Ajayi and Lookman and a disciplined team performance, Nigeria signalled their intent early in the tournament — a reminder that the Super Eagles are ready to soar once again on Africa’s biggest football stage.
