Christmas Cheer: NUJ FCT Under Ike Distributes 600 Bags Of Rice To Journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, under the leadership of its Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, has once again demonstrated its strong commitment to members’ welfare with the distribution of over 600 bags of rice to journalists in Abuja to mark the Christmas season.

The annual welfare initiative, which has become a hallmark of Comrade Ike’s administration, is designed to ease the burden of prevailing economic hardships on journalists, while fostering unity, solidarity and a shared sense of belonging within the council.

Ahead of the distribution, the NUJ FCT Chairman and members of the Executive Council held an end-of-year interactive session with members of the State Executive Council (SEC), made up of chapel chairmen and secretaries. During the engagement, Comrade Ike presented an update on the council’s activities and achievements, highlighting progress on the ongoing construction and remodelling of the NUJ Congress Hall.

She urged members to sustain cooperation and teamwork, noting that collective effort remains critical to strengthening the council and consolidating the gains already recorded.

The meeting climaxed with a unanimous vote of confidence in Comrade Ike’s leadership, which SEC members described as proactive, pragmatic, performance-driven and purposeful.

Speaking during the rice distribution exercise, Comrade Ike stressed that the initiative went beyond a festive tradition, describing it as a deliberate and thoughtful intervention aimed at supporting journalists during challenging times.

“It is with deep joy and appreciation that we come together today for this moment of sharing and unity,” she said. “On behalf of the NUJ FCT Council, I am delighted to announce the distribution of over 600 bags of rice to our members as we prepare to celebrate Christmas.
“This initiative is not just about food items; it reflects our deep commitment to the welfare of journalists who continue to uphold the values of truth, accountability and public service in the FCT.”

She explained that the programme, now in its second year, was inspired by the positive impact recorded during its inaugural edition. “This is the second year in a row that we are undertaking this initiative, following the remarkable impact it had last year,” she noted.

“The joy it brought to families reinforced our resolve to make it a tradition that strengthens our bond as one united family.”
According to the NUJ FCT Chairman, the council remains determined to ensure that every member feels supported, especially during a season that embodies love, compassion and generosity.

“These bags of rice are not only meant for the festive table; they symbolise the council’s unwavering support for you, our frontline professionals in the fourth estate,” she added.

Comrade Ike also used the occasion to remind members of the core values of unionism and collective responsibility, particularly at a time when journalists face increasing professional and personal pressures.
“As we approach Christmas, a season of giving, reflection and renewal, this gesture should remind us of the true spirit of our union: standing together in service,” she said.

“We recognise the sacrifices journalists make daily, reporting under difficult conditions, defending press freedom and giving voice to the voiceless. Your dedication inspires us, and we remain committed to standing by you.”

She expressed appreciation to sponsors, partners and members of the Executive Council for their support, noting that their collective efforts were helping to reshape welfare and community care within the NUJ FCT Council.
“Together, we are changing the narrative and strengthening the culture of care within our union,” she said.

As members received their bags of rice, Comrade Ike encouraged them to embrace the spirit of the season, urging them to carry home not just food items, but also a renewed sense of unity and shared purpose.

“Take home not only rice, but the warmth of our collective journey,” she said. “I wish you a Merry Christmas in advance, and may the season bring peace, prosperity and renewed strength for the year ahead. God bless NUJ FCT, and God bless Nigeria.”

The initiative once again highlights the NUJ FCT Council’s resolve to prioritise journalists’ welfare while deepening unity, compassion and collective responsibility within the union.
