ABEOKUTA – The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the driver who drove the Lexus SUV involved in the road accident that injured world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua and killed two occupants.
In a brief statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Boluwatife Babaseyi, disclosed that the driver is currently in police custody as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue.
“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing,” the statement reads.
The accident, which occurred earlier this week along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, sent shockwaves across the country and beyond, given Joshua’s global profile in professional boxing.
While the boxer survived the incident and was discharged from hospital on Wednesday, the crash tragically claimed the lives of two of his close friends who were traveling with him at the time.
Their remains were repatriated back to the UK on Wednesday.
Eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle was involved in a high-impact collision, leaving two of the occupants dead on the spot.
Police authorities have assured the public that a thorough and transparent investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
