…Says Commission’s Action Confirms Fears Of Entrenched Partisanship
LAGOS – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has released the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Certified True Copy (CTC) report on the Ekiti State gubernatorial primary election, which according to the party, confirmed that it complied with the law.
The party in statement on Thursday signed by Chief Adeola Ogunrinde, PDP National Ex-Officio, Hon. Mrs. Lanre Fajuyi, PDP Zonal Ex-Officio and Chief Sanya Atofarati, Southwest Zonal Publicity Secretary, expressed displeasure over what it described as a deliberate plot by the Commission to disenfranchise the PDP and unlawfully exclude it’s duly nominated and widely accepted candidate from the electoral process.
The statement reads, “We, members of the Southwest PDP Zonal Executive Caucus in Ekiti State, express our grave concern over the relentless and coordinated assault on Nigeria’s already fragile democracy, an assault now being shamefully prosecuted by institutions constitutionally empowered to safeguard it.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), under the Tinubu-led administration, has regrettably degenerated into an instrument of political intimidation and suppression, brazenly acting in contempt of the rule of law and the sovereign will of the people.
“Of particular concern is Dr. Bunmi Omosendemi, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti State, a known card-carrying member of the APC in Lagos State and an appointee of an APC-controlled government. Despite our restraint and our repeated calls on the people of Ekiti to endure this administration in good faith, recent actions have only confirmed Nigerians’ worst fears of entrenched partisanship, institutional bias, and unrepentant corruption within critical democratic structures.
“Today, the world must pay attention to the blatant illegality being perpetrated by the leadership of INEC under Prof. Joash Amupitan as Chairman, and the calculated attempt to undermine constitutional democracy through administrative impunity.
“Attached herewith is the Certified True Copy (CTC) of INEC’s own official report on the Ekiti PDP Governorship Primary, which affirms INEC’s presence and due monitoring of the exercise in full compliance with extant laws and guidelines. Nigerians are therefore right to ask: what lawful justification exists for INEC’s refusal to act on its own report, if not a deliberate plot to disenfranchise the PDP and unlawfully exclude its duly nominated and widely accepted candidate from the electoral process?
“This unfolding conspiracy is a dangerous attempt to subvert the democratic will of Ekiti people and impose an unpopular, illegitimate, and manifestly incompetent government through the backdoor.
“Let it be stated without ambiguity: the Peoples Democratic Party will not fold its arms while democracy is strangled in broad daylight. The PDP remains fully prepared and resolute to deploy every available legal, constitutional, and democratic means to resist this brazen assault on the rule of law. We shall vigorously pursue all judicial remedies, mobilise national and international democratic stakeholders, and hold every individual and institution complicit in this illegality accountable.
“Democracy must prevail. The law must be obeyed. The will of the people of Ekiti State shall not be subverted.”
