LAGOS – The Changan CS55 and Kia Seltos have emerged as standout winners at the 2025 Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) International Auto Awards, clinching the coveted titles of Midsize Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) of the Year and Compact SUV of the Year, respectively.
The winners were unveiled at the 18th edition of the prestigious awards ceremony, which convened key stakeholders from across Nigeria’s automotive value chain, including manufacturers, assemblers, dealers, regulators and industry analysts.
The event celebrated excellence, resilience and innovation in a sector that continues to evolve amid policy reforms, technological change and shifting consumer preferences.
For the Changan CS55, the latest accolade further cements its rising profile in the Nigerian market.
The compact crossover SUV had earlier made a strong impression at the 17th edition of the awards, where it was named Nigeria’s New Car of the Year.
At the 2025 ceremony, the CS55 edged out stiff competition from models such as the Kia Sonet and Chery Tiggo to secure the midsize SUV crown, reflecting growing consumer acceptance and critical acclaim for the brand.
Changan vehicles are marketed and assembled in Nigeria by Mikano Motors, a development industry watchers say underscores the increasing impact of local assembly on the nation’s automotive landscape.
Analysts note that local assembly not only enhances affordability and after-sales support, but also aligns with government efforts to deepen industrialisation and create jobs within the sector.
In the highly competitive Compact SUV category, the Kia Seltos emerged victorious, beating notable contenders including the Toyota Prado, Changan CS55 and Chery Tiggo.
Industry analysts described the Seltos as a compelling blend of practicality and style, praising its bold design, versatility and strong appeal to modern, urban drivers seeking efficiency without sacrificing comfort or aesthetics.
Beyond the vehicle categories, several organisations were also recognised for their contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s automotive industry.
The Mikano Group was named Auto Company of the Year, while Iron Products Industries (IPI) Limited received the award for Truck Assembler/ Body Builder of the Year.
Lanre Shittu Motors (JAC) was honoured as Truck Plant of the Year, and Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) clinched the Passenger Car Assembly Plant of the Year award.
These recognitions highlighted what observers described as the depth and growing strength of indigenous participation in Nigeria’s automotive market, particularly in vehicle assembly, body building and component manufacturing.
