Barrister Princess Mediatrix Nwamaka Chigbo
The Global Association of Female Attorneys (GAFA) has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently bring to justice those responsible for the killing of Abuja-based lawyer, Princess Mediatrix Nwamaka Chigbo.
In a press release on Tuesday by Mrs. Chinelo Virginia Iriele, GAFA’s International President, the association described Chigbo’s death as a devastating loss to the legal profession and a grave reminder of Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
The late lawyer, who was abducted and later killed on January 5, was a pioneer member of GAFA and once served as its International Secretary.
GAFA said Chigbo was widely admired for her dedication to public service, noting that she was deeply involved in pro bono legal work, mediation efforts, school outreach programmes, and advocacy for the rights of the vulnerable.
According to the group, her commitment to justice and humanity set her apart as a role model within and outside the legal community.
The association also recounted that Chigbo was on the phone with her sister at the time of the incident, adding that her death has left colleagues and loved ones in deep grief.
Describing the killing as both a personal tragedy and a national concern, GAFA lamented what it called the growing pattern of violent crimes across the country, often without perpetrators being identified or punished.
“Citizens are increasingly left to bear the burden of their own safety,” the group said, stressing that the protection of lives and property must remain the foremost duty of any responsible government.
GAFA urged authorities to move beyond expressions of sympathy and take concrete action to ensure accountability. It said justice in Chigbo’s case would not only honour her memory but also serve as a deterrent against future crimes.
“The perpetrators of this heinous act must be exposed and made to face the full weight of the law. Accountability is not optional; it is essential,” the association said.
The group further called on political leaders to place the welfare and security of citizens above all other interests, warning that the continued loss of innocent lives is eroding public confidence in the government.
