Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral Nnewi, Anambra State was dedicated on Wednesday in a momentous celebration of devotion and architectural triumph.
The doors of the beautiful cathedral which took almost two decades to complete was flung open worshippers amidst excitement.
The solemn inaugural Mass, presided over by an assembly of eminent church leaders, featured Francis Cardinal Arinze, Peter Cardinal Okpalaeke, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke (Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha Province), Most Rev. Jude Thaddeus Okolo (Apostolic Nuncio to the Czech Republic), Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji (President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria), and over 75 fellow bishops and reverend fathers.
The Anambra State governor, Prof Charles Soludo, the Presidential Candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the last general elections, Mr Peter Obi and other high profile politicians attended the occasion.
Some of the enthusiastic worshippers who spoke with our correspondent described said that the occasion marked a pivotal chapter in the Catholic Church’s legacy across Nigeria.
Earlier on Tuesday, a special Gala night was put together for the Bishops and other top ranking personalities in his Otolo-Nnewi residence.
After the mass, some people who couldn’t find it seat in the cathedral due to the fact that so many people turned up for the dedication started murmuring that the Publisher of Authority Newspaper, Sen Dr Ifeanyi Ubah was accorded the respect he deserved during the mass
What started as a murmur came to the climax when a Knight (names withheld) renounced his Christianity over alleged disrespect of the memory of Sen Dr Ifeanyi Ubah.
Meanwhile, some respondents applauded the Chairman of the Dedication Planning Committee, Chief Ifeanyi Ekwulugwo and his members for a job well done.
Anambra State governor, Prof Charles Soludo later in the day, played host to the high profile clergies at Light House, Awka, they also later had a time out at Funcity.
