Community Unites: Rallying Against 15% Staff Layoff at Telfair Museum

Community Unites: Rallying Against 15% Staff Layoff at Telfair Museum

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A crowd gathered outside the historic Owens-Thomas House in Savannah on Saturday to show solidarity with Telfair Museum employees who recently lost their jobs.

The Savannah Democratic-Socialist Alliance (DSA) reported that earlier in January, approximately 15% of the museum’s workforce was unexpectedly laid off.

Following these abrupt layoffs, current staff members at Telfair Museum presented their CEO with a letter of demands, signed collectively, during an all-staff meeting, according to a DSA representative.

The publication has learned that these demands have yet to receive a response from museum leadership.

On Saturday, a small group of supporters gathered to back the affected workers, aiming to safeguard the rights of both current and future employees at the museum.

“The people who were let go… These are the people who interpret the story of Savannah,” said Keyshawn Housey, a member of DSA. “They interpret the culture of Savannah, they talk about the art, they highlight the art, they showcase everything.”

News 3 reached out to the Telfair Museum for comment but has not heard back.
