The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has commended the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, for the timely announcement of the Federal Government’s intervention to support Nigerian farmers following the recent drop in food prices below production cost.
In a statement signed by its National President, Muhammed Magaji Gettado, the association noted that while the gradual reduction in food prices is a welcome relief to consumers and aligns with the Federal Government’s food security objectives, it has had adverse effects on farmers who are now forced to sell their produce far below the cost of production.
AFAN warned that if the situation is not urgently addressed, it could discourage farmers, reduce future production, and threaten the sustainability of the country’s agricultural sector.
The association therefore, welcomed the minister’s assurance that concrete measures are being put in place to cushion the impact on farmers.
It suggested that such measures should include strategic produce offtake, strengthened commodity aggregation, access to affordable financing, targeted input support, and expanded market stabilization mechanisms to protect farmers from losses while sustaining national food supply.
AFAN said the proposed intervention reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to balancing the interests of both farmers and consumers, in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for agricultural transformation, rural development, and economic stability.
The association reiterated its readiness to collaborate with federal and state governments, as well as relevant agencies, to ensure effective implementation of the proposed support measures, emphasising that structured engagement with genuine farmer groups remains critical to achieving lasting solutions.
AFAN also called on farmers nationwide to remain resilient, assuring them that the Federal Government’s intervention would help stabilize the sector, restore confidence, and guarantee sustainable agricultural production.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating farmer-friendly policies and supporting government efforts to achieve food security, improved livelihoods, and a resilient agricultural economy.
