The Nigeria Premier League (NPFL) has handed down a heavy sanction to Enyimba following crowd control and security failures during their matchday 21 fixture against Barau FC in Aba.
The league body confirmed that Enyimba were fined ₦5 million after several breaches were recorded during the encounter at the Enyimba International Stadium, which ended goalless.
According to the NPFL, the club failed to provide adequate security, leading to the loss of personal items belonging to match officials.
Supporters were also found guilty of encroaching on restricted areas of the stadium, while match officials were reportedly held hostage at the end of the game.
As part of the punishment, the Aba-based giants will play their next three home matches behind closed doors. Enyimba have been given 48 hours from the date of the notice to file an appeal against the sanctions.
Meanwhile, Abia Warriors are facing a selection headache ahead of their matchday 22 clash with Nasarawa United. The Umuahia club will be without Yakubu Hammed and Ayodele Ezekiel, both ruled out through injury.
The duo have been regular features for Abia Warriors this season, and their absence is a blow as the side looks to maintain momentum in the league.
Technical adviser Imama Amapakabo is expected to reshuffle his squad and identify suitable replacements for Sunday’s encounter at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
Abia Warriors will be aiming to cut the gap on table leaders Rivers United, who are away on continental duty this weekend, offering a chance for chasing teams to close in.
Elsewhere, Wikki Tourists have moved to address their defensive struggles with the signing of Gabriel Solomon. The defender has joined the Bauchi Elephants from non-league side Nanchi FC and was officially unveiled by the club’s chairman, Salamanu Abubakar, on Thursday.
Solomon previously featured for Nigeria National League side Bichi First FC during the first stanza of the season and is expected to add steel to the backline of coach Abdullahi Maikaba.
Wikki Tourists have conceded 19 goals in the NPFL so far and are currently on an eight-game winless run, a slump they hope the new signing can help arrest.
