The Anambra State Government has formally abolished the practice of closing schools on Mondays due to the sit-at-home order, issuing an Executive Order that mandates full resumption of academic and administrative activities.
In a letter dated January 22, 2026, and signed by Loveline Mgbemena, Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Board, the government directed all education officials across the 21 local government areas to ensure strict compliance.
The directive followed a state executive council retreat presided over by Governor Chukwuma Soludo on January 21.
“By this directive, any staff—tutorial or non-tutorial—who fails to attend school or office on Monday will either receive 20 per cent of his/her salary or forfeit it entirely,” the letter stated.

The order, titled “Executive Order on Termination of Monday Sit-at-Home in Anambra State,” emphasised that the long-standing disruption had been abolished with immediate effect.
The sit-at-home practice was originally declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in August 2021 to demand the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Although IPOB leadership later suspended the directive, residents continued to observe it out of fear of violent reprisals.
The government’s latest move seeks to restore normalcy in schools and workplaces, warning that sanctions will be enforced against defaulters.
“Please be properly guided as the above is the executive decision of the state government,” Mgbemena added.
