Manchester United reignited the Premier League title race with a pulsating 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, ending the Gunners’ long unbeaten run.
A late, long-range strike from Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha proved decisive, condemning the league leaders to a first defeat in 13 matches across all competitions and their first home loss since May.
Arsenal struck first through a calamitous own goal by Lisandro Martinez after sustained early pressure, but United responded before the break when Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on a defensive error to level matters.
The visitors carried that momentum into the second half, and five minutes after the restart Patrick Dorgu fired a stunning 20-yard effort into the top corner to put United ahead, with VAR dismissing Arsenal’s appeals for handball.
Mikel Arteta’s side rallied late on and thought they had salvaged a point in the 84th minute when Mikel Merino bundled home from close range following Bukayo Saka’s corner.
However, the relief inside the Emirates was short-lived as United struck again just three minutes later, Cunha unleashing a powerful drive from distance that beat David Raya and sealed a memorable away win.
The result tightens the title race, with Arsenal now only four points clear of Manchester City and Aston Villa, both of whom closed the gap with weekend victories. Arsenal’s recent three-game winless run in the league has raised fresh questions about their nerve, particularly with memories of previous late-season slips still lingering after 22 years without a league title.
For United, the win marked their first league success at the Emirates since 2017 and underlined an impressive start for interim boss Michael Carrick.
Having already stunned Manchester City last weekend, Carrick has now overseen back-to-back victories against the top two, lifting United into fourth place and injecting renewed belief after a turbulent period at Old Trafford.
