In a resignation letter dated January 24, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Bwalahizhi Ward in Hawul Local Government Area, and copied to the party’s local and state leadership, the lawmaker formally announced his decision to leave the PDP.
He said the decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders across party lines, as well as discussions with his family and close associates.
“After wide consultations with leaders across political parties, as well as friends, family, and loved ones, I have found it necessary to tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” Balami stated.

Balami attributed his defection to what he described as persistent internal crises and factional divisions within the PDP.
According to him, the situation has continued to weaken the party and hinder its effectiveness.
“The deepening crisis and persistent factional divisions within the party have continued to undermine its unity and effectiveness,” he said.
