US Mission Suspends Updates in Nigeria over Funding Challenges

The United States Mission in Nigeria has suspended its routine updates on its official social media page due to financial difficulties linked to a lapse in government funding.

The Mission said the decision was taken as part of temporary operational adjustments caused by the funding situation.

In a statement shared on its verified X account on Saturday, the Mission explained that it would no longer post regular information until full operations are restored.

However, it stressed that critical safety and security messages would still be released when necessary.

“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information,” the post read.

The development has raised concerns among Nigerians who rely on the Mission’s online platforms for official updates and guidance on travel and consular services. The Mission, however, assured the public that essential services would not be completely disrupted.

According to the statement, passport and visa services will continue to operate in the United States and at American embassies and consulates abroad, including Nigeria, depending on how the funding situation evolves.

“At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” the Mission stated.

Officials further clarified that new announcements would only be made when full operations resume, except in cases involving urgent safety or security concerns that affect the public directly.

The Mission also advised individuals seeking information about services, appointments, and operational status to check the official U.S. travel platform for guidance until normal updates return.
