US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth guaranteed on Sunday night that Iran will ‘surrender,’ and President Donald Trump will set the terms of their defeat.

Hegseth sat down for an exclusive interview with CBS News’ ’60 Minutes,’ where he was asked what the president meant by his demand for an ‘unconditional surrender.’

‘It means we’re fighting to win. It means we set the terms,’ the Defense Secretary replied.

‘We’ll know when they’re not capable of fighting. There’ll be a point where they’ll have no choice but to do that. Whether they know it or not, they will be combat-ineffective. They will surrender.’

Hegseth also said it would be up to President Trump to set the terms of the surrender.

‘Whether they want to admit it or not, whether their pride lets them say it out loud or not — it’s President Trump who will set the terms of that,’ he said in the interview, following Trump’s pledge to dial up the attacks as the war in the Middle East stretches into a second week.

The head of Iran’s Military Office Abu al-Qassem Baba’iyan was killed in the latest wave of attacks, the IDF has claimed on X.

Iran has since retaliated to the US and Israel’s strikes, which took out Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, by launching a series of ballistic missiles and drones at the United Arab Emirates and Israel on Sunday.

Clerics in the country have also announced that they have selected Khamenei’s second eldest son to be the new Supreme Leader.

Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has strong links to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and was chosen by Iran’s Assembly of Experts ‘under pressure from the Revolutionary Guards’, according to Iranian opposition outlet Iran International.

Mojtaba is not a high-ranking cleric, has never held office and does not have an official role in the regime.
