High Court Fixes May 18 For Trial Of Man Over Alleged Call For Coup Against Tinubu

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday fixed May 18 for the commencement of trial of a man, Innocent Chukwuma, accused of calling on the military to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu through a social media post.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the case after the prosecution sought additional time to study the case file.

At the resumed hearing, the prosecuting counsel, David Kaswe, informed the court that he had only recently been assigned to the matter.

According to him, the case file was transferred to his office by the Department of State Services. Kaswe therefore requested an adjournment to enable him study the documents before proceeding with the trial.

Following the request, the court adjourned the matter until May 18 and 19 for trial.

Chukwuma was arraigned before the court over an alleged inciting post on social media. Operatives of the DSS reportedly traced and arrested him in Oyigbo in Port Harcourt.

The charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, is titled Federal Republic of Nigeria vs. Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume.

According to the charge, the defendant used his handle, “@TheAgroman”, on the social media platform 𝕏 to call for a military takeover in Nigeria.

In one of the posts cited in court, Chukwuma allegedly wrote, “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government, and join the AES. That is all we need now.”

Authorities allege that the statement was capable of inciting the military to overthrow the elected government.
