VIDEO: Panic in Banana Island as residents trapped in faulty elevator

Residents of a luxury apartment complex in Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos, were thrown into panic after several occupants became trapped inside an elevator for more than 40 minutes, sparking fears of suffocation in the poorly ventilated space.

A viral video circulating on social media captured the tense moment as distressed individuals struggled inside the cramped lift, sweating profusely and repeatedly calling for help.

The incident reportedly occurred at the Banana Island School Apartment complex, located within the upscale Banana Island neighbourhood, one of Lagos’ most exclusive residential areas known for its high-value properties and affluent residents.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the trapped occupants had been stuck inside the elevator for nearly an hour as temperatures inside the confined space continued to rise.

In the footage, one of the victims could be heard pleading for urgent intervention.

“We have been stuck inside this lift for over 40 minutes; we are about to suffocate,” the man cried out in the video.

The individual, whose identity had not been confirmed as of press time, said they had reached out to the landlady’s daughter to report the situation. According to him, she allegedly responded that “they will see what they can do,” a remark that triggered outrage online.

The video quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread reactions from Nigerians.

While some users expressed sympathy for the trapped residents, others highlighted what they described as the irony of the situation, arguing that even in Banana Island, often regarded as a symbol of luxury and modern living in Lagos, infrastructure failures remain a recurring problem.

Commentators also used the incident to question the maintenance standards of high-end residential buildings in the city, noting that elevator failures in luxury apartments should be rare if proper servicing and safety protocols are followed.

As of the time of filing this report, it was unclear whether the trapped occupants had been rescued or if building management had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
