Academic activities at Taraba State University (TSU) are expected to resume on Monday, March 16, 2026, following moves by striking lecturers to suspend their nearly two-week-old industrial action.
Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the university had embarked on an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their salaries and other outstanding entitlements.
The dispute, however, appears close to resolution after the Agbu Kefas administration intervened in the matter.
During an unscheduled visit to the institution on Thursday, Governor Kefas approved over ₦3 billion to clear part of the salary backlog that triggered the strike.
Sources said the governor also directed the immediate release of ₦200 million, while an additional ₦100 million will be paid monthly starting from April until the outstanding liabilities are fully settled.
Chairman of the union at the university, Joshua Mbave, confirmed that the union leadership convened an emergency meeting shortly after the governor’s announcement to review the development and decide on the next line of action.
Mbave said the union also scheduled a follow-up meeting with the university management to finalise arrangements for the lecturers’ return to the classroom.
“After the governor’s financial commitment yesterday, we went into emergency meeting as a union, some of the redress were forwarded by the members which am taking to a meeting with the VC and other management members this morning, possibly at the end our our meeting, lectures will resume coming Monday, we are ready to call off the indefinite strike action.” Mbave told our correspondent on phone.
If the discussions are concluded successfully, lecturers are expected to return to classes on Monday, bringing relief to students whose academic activities had been disrupted by the strike.
