South-Africa: Sanitation upgrade sees 110 toilets installed in Imizamo Yethu

The Imizamo Yethu informal settlement in Cape Town’s Hout Bay suburb has received a major sanitation boost.

As part of the City of Cape Town’s ongoing sanitation upgrades in the area, they installed new full flush toilets and taps for the community’s use.

IMIZAMO YETHU’S SANITATION UPGRADE

According to the City, 110 toilets and 34 taps were installed in Imizamo Yethu as of March 2026.

This installation was spearheaded by the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate and the Informal Settlements and Basic Services Branch. It was achieved through an investment of R1.8 million.

Funds from this investment also went towards removing “ageing, vandalised and misused infrastructure” to make way for the new facilities.

The recent upgrades focused on Donsteyakhe, Imizamo Yethu SAPS, Penzance, Depotsite TRA and Huguenot.

‘DIGNIFIED AND RELIABLE SANITATION SERVICES’

Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, expounded on the City’s aim to improve sanitation in Imizamo Yethu and beyond.

“Our focus remains on ensuring that every resident, regardless of where they live, has access to dignified and reliable sanitation services,” said Bahroodien.

“These new facilities add to the existing services in the area, which already include 338 full flush toilets, 132 chemical toilets and 68 portable flush toilets.”

Through the Expanded Public Works Programme, the upkeep of these amenities will be managed by 24 janitors. These janitors were newly appointed from the local community. Their duties will primarily consist of cleaning and reporting faults to the relevant maintenance teams.

LOOKING BEYOND

Full flush toilets are easier to maintain and are more environmentally sustainable. Such factors contributes to extending the lifespan of these amenities.

With the installation of these toilets and taps, residents of Imizamo Yethu can easily access improved sanitation and clean water.
