Bala Mohammed Halts Defection to APC as Power-Sharing Talks Collapse in Bauchi

BAUCHI (Sundiata Post) – Governor Bala Mohammed has shelved plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after negotiations over a power-sharing arrangement ended in deadlock.
Sama’ila Burga, chairman of the Turaki-led PDP faction in the state, disclosed this to journalists in Bauchi on Saturday.

Burga said consultations involving the governor, his faction, and APC leaders broke down after the ruling party rejected a proposed 60–40 formula for control of the party structure in the state.
Under the arrangement, Mohammed’s camp would have retained 60 per cent of the APC structure, from ward to state level. Burga noted that similar formulas had been adopted in other states where sitting governors defected to the APC.
“They rejected this formula and we have closed that discussion,” he said. “You cannot expect a government bringing its structure from ward level to the state not to have control of the party.”
He added that the APC had shown it was “not ready to accommodate the PDP structure and the state government.”

According to Burga, the APC initiated the talks through the governor, with members of its national leadership—alongside Abba Yusuf—visiting Bauchi to persuade Mohammed to switch parties.

With the APC option now off the table, Burga said the governor and his supporters remain open to exploring other political platforms.
“Plans are underway to consider fresh options for possible defection from the ward to the state level,” he said.
He added that the press briefing was held “at the instance of His Excellency, the Governor, who is leading the discussions.”
