Arthur Okonkwo will be hoping for a return to action when Wrexham face Coventry City, featuring Frank Onyeka, in a decisive Championship clash on Sunday as the Welsh club continue their push for a play-off place, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Okonkwo has been named on the bench for Wrexham’s last two matches, a notable development during a crucial stage of the campaign, with manager Phil Parkinson opting for experience in goal following consecutive defeats that threatened their position in the top six.
The decision has been framed as a tactical adjustment rather than a loss of confidence in the Nigerian goalkeeper, who has been a regular presence for much of the season.
Parkinson instead turned to Danny Ward, whose recent return from injury has coincided with back-to-back clean sheets, helping to restore defensive stability.
Reports suggest the change also followed a slight dip in Okonkwo’s form in the matches leading up to his omission, with the manager keen to refresh his side and reassess defensive organisation during a high-pressure run-in.
With only a two matches remaining, Wrexham sit level on points with Hull City and hold the final play-off spot on goal difference, making their upcoming fixtures critical in determining whether they secure promotion contention.
Their task, however, will not be straightforward against a Coventry side that have already sealed the Championship title and promotion, under the guidance of Frank Lampard.
Coventry, who have dominated much of the campaign, confirmed their status as champions with a 5-1 victory over Portsmouth, and have scored 90 goals in 44 matches, the highest in the division.
Despite their title being secured, Lampard is expected to field a strong side, with Onyeka likely to feature in midfield as Coventry aim to maintain momentum and extend their impressive home record.
For Wrexham, the fixture represents both a challenge and an opportunity.
The club head into the match on the back of consecutive victories, including a 2-0 win over Stoke City and a 1-0 triumph at Oxford United, results that have kept their promotion hopes alive.
Their defensive record on the road has also been a key strength, with just 25 goals conceded in 22 away matches, the second-best tally in the division.
The focus, however, will remain on whether Okonkwo is restored to the starting line-up or if Parkinson retains Ward for continuity, following the positive impact of his inclusion.
A return for the Nigerian goalkeeper would place him directly in the spotlight against a high-scoring Coventry attack, while also offering him an opportunity to reaffirm his role in the team during the decisive closing stages of the season.
With Wrexham still needing positive results to secure a play-off berth, and Coventry aiming to celebrate their title-winning campaign in style, the encounter carries significant implications, with Okonkwo’s situation adding an extra layer of intrigue from a Nigerian perspective.
