UAE announces exit from OPEC amid Middle East tensions

United Arab Emirates (UAE) has revealed plans to withdraw from OPEC and OPEC+, citing a shift toward prioritising its national economic and energy interests.

The decision, confirmed in an official statement on Tuesday, is set to take effect on Friday and comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension and rising global oil prices.

“This decision reflects the UAE’s long-term strategic and economic vision and evolving energy profile,” the statement said, noting the country’s contributions and sacrifices within the alliance.

“However, the time has come to focus our efforts on what our national interest dictates,” it added.

Energy Minister Suhail Mohamed al-Mazrouei explained that the move followed a detailed review of current and future production policies, stressing that it was made independently without consultation with other member states.

The exit also comes against the backdrop of strained regional relations, Iranian disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, and growing frustration within the UAE over what it sees as inadequate support from neighbouring Gulf countries.
