Arsenal battled to a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night in Spain, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the return leg.
Arsenal struck first late in the opening half, with Viktor Gyökeres calmly converting from the penalty spot in the 44th minute after a foul inside the box handed the visitors a crucial breakthrough.
The English side carried that advantage into the break, having weathered early pressure from Atletico, who created several half-chances but failed to convert.
The hosts responded in the second half, and their persistence paid off in the 56th minute when Julian Alvarez equalised from the penalty spot after a VAR review overturned an earlier decision.
The equaliser shifted momentum, with Atletico pushing for a winner, but Arsenal’s defence, marshalled by goalkeeper David Raya, held firm under sustained pressure.
The closing stages of the match were marked by controversy and drama, including a late penalty initially awarded to Arsenal before being overturned following another VAR review, sparking protests from the visitors.
Both teams created chances in the final minutes, with Atletico’s Nahuel Molina firing narrowly over the bar deep into stoppage time, while Declan Rice saw a powerful effort blocked as Arsenal searched for a late winner.
Despite the intensity, neither side could find a decisive goal, leaving the semi-final delicately balanced ahead of the second leg.
The encounter highlighted the tactical discipline of Atletico under Diego Simeone and Arsenal’s resilience in a high-stakes European contest, with both sides demonstrating attacking intent and defensive solidity.
With the aggregate score level, attention now turns to the return fixture, where a place in the Champions League final will be at stake in what promises to be another fiercely contested encounter.
