The National Police Service (NPS) is urging citizens to exercise extreme caution as relentless heavy rains trigger dangerous flood levels across the country. This safety advisory comes in response to ongoing storms that have already crippled infrastructure and upended daily life in multiple regions.
In a notice shared via X, the NPS confirmed that officers are maintaining a state of high alert. The service is currently working alongside various government agencies to monitor the evolving weather patterns and coordinate emergency responses.
Officials are treating the current conditions with gravity, reminding the public that staying vigilant is vital, especially for those living in or traveling through flood-prone zones.
The situation is particularly concerning within the capital. Authorities report that water levels are surging in the Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, Kamiti, and Athi rivers.
“All these waterways drain into the larger Athi River system, which is currently running at critically high levels,” NPS said.
Police are keeping a close watch on these arteries, noting that the rising water poses a severe threat to downstream communities. Residents in those areas should remain on guard, as flooding can occur suddenly even if their specific neighborhood has not seen significant rainfall.
The advisory points out that these downstream effects make the weather unpredictable and dangerous, as flash floods can strike rapidly without warning. Consequently, authorities are urging residents to stay away from riverbanks and low-lying ground to avoid being caught in sudden surges.
The heavy rains are also battering the country’s transport networks, leaving several key routes on the verge of becoming impassable. Police report that waterlogged roads and poor visibility are creating treacherous driving conditions and increasing the risk of accidents.
“Given these conditions, the public is strongly urged to exercise extreme caution at all times by avoiding driving through or walking in moving water, as even shallow currents can be deceptively strong and capable of sweeping away vehicles or individuals,” the statement said.
Furthermore, the police are advising families in high-risk areas to prepare for immediate relocation to safer ground if instructed. They are highlighting the necessity of monitoring updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and local authorities, urging everyone to act on evacuation orders without delay.
