Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has stated that the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) might end up joining forces.
Kwankwaso stated this on Monday during a live appearance in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’.
The former Kano governor was addressing his departure from the ADC and alliance with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
He said, “The NDC and ADC may still work together before the election.
“So you see, there is a lot happening in this country, but older people don’t even understand.
“People are talking of religion and ethnicity. People are talking, especially those at our ages, but the younger people are looking for the right leadership for this country, and I think they are absolutely right.”
Meanwhile, Kwankwaso has said he and his supporters received nothing in return for helping former President Muhammadu Buhari win the 2015 presidential election.
Naija News reports that Kwankwaso said his political structure delivered nearly two million votes for Buhari, but was neither recognised nor rewarded by the administration.
He spoke on Monday during an interview on Arise Television.
Kwankwaso said, “I worked so hard. We brought about 1.9 million, almost 2 million votes. But as politicians, we are not recognised. We put our lives on the line at that time.
“But unfortunately, we could not see any benefit either as individuals or the constituencies that we represented.”
The former governor, however, did not state what he expected from the Buhari administration.
‘Nigeria Ready For Change’
Kwankwaso reviewed successive administrations since 1999, saying former President Olusegun Obasanjo did his best, while Umaru Yar’Adua faced serious health challenges.
He added that Goodluck Jonathan’s administration was complicated by disputes over whether he had agreed to serve only one term.
Speaking on the current administration, he said, “Everybody knows there are issues with this administration again.
“And therefore, people are determined at the grassroots level, and even at the level we are operating now, that there should be some level of changes.”
Kwankwaso said the failures of previous administrations had created momentum for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) since he and Peter Obi joined the party on May 3.
He said, “Since we decided to join NDC, Nigerians have decided to come and join us. People are opening offices everywhere across the world. So we are happy about that.”
The former Kano governor said his political experience had taught him that a president coming from one’s region did not guarantee good governance.
He said this informed his support for zoning the NDC’s 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
Kwankwaso added, “Those of us in the political trenches would tell you that it is not only the man from your end that would make the country move forward.
“What is key is to have quality leadership, people who are enthusiastic, determined and committed to give the country the leadership it deserves.”
