The Federal Road Safety Corps has cautioned motorists against route violations following a fatal road accident along the New Mile 3 axis of the Gombe–Yola Federal Highway in Gombe State which claimed the lives of two persons, including a policewoman.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, Samson Kaura, said the crash was caused by a trailer driver who violated traffic regulations after loading some litres of fuel at AA Rano Filling Station.
“It was caused by a trailer who took fuel at Rano filling station. Instead of taking the right route, he did route violation. He lost control,” Kaura said.
Our correspondent learnt that the accident, which occurred at about 11:30am on Wednesday, involved a DAF truck with registration number XH 122 GME, three motorcycles, pedestrians and nearby shops.
Preliminary findings by Arewa PUNCH revealed that the truck driver allegedly attempted to enter the filling station through a one-way access when the vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control and running over motorcycles, pedestrians and shops.
The police identified the deceased as Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina, attached to the Communications Department of the Gombe State Police Command, and an unidentified male pedestrian.
Confirming the incident, the command said, “As a result of the accident, two persons, namely Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina attached to Communications department, Gombe State Command, and one unidentified male pedestrian, regrettably lost their lives, while two other persons, including the truck driver, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.”
The police added that the crash also damaged three motorcycles and some nearby shops.
Kaura urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and avoid dangerous driving practices capable of causing avoidable tragedies on the highways.
“Take the right lane to prevent accidents. People should obey regulations. We should organise our journey in such a way that we can take our time to comply with route regulation,” he added.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Umar Chuso, also warned motorists against traffic violations and stressed the need for proper vehicle maintenance to prevent accidents.
