The Bureau of Engraving and Printing, a government agency
within the US treasury department, is reportedly considering plans to
potentially print a $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump to mark the
country’s 250th anniversary.
If the proposal materialises, it would be the first
appearance of a living person on US currency in more than 150 years.
Citing a statement, CNN reports that a treasury department
spokesperson confirmed the plans.
“Should this legislative mandate be signed into law, the BEP
is moving proactively to produce a $250 commemorative note which will
appropriately recognize the 250th Anniversary of our great nation,” the
spokesperson was quoted as saying, adding that the department was conducting
“appropriate planning and due diligence” in response to “active legislation”.
Last February, a bill dubbed the “Donald J. Trump $250 Bill
Act” was introduced at the congress.
But the bill has yet to be passed by the house of
representatives since its introduction.
US federal law generally prohibits living persons from
appearing on US bonds, securities, notes, or postal currency.
A few commemorative coins, however, have borne images of
living persons but they were not broadly circulated.
Hilary Clinton, former US first lady and Trump’s former
rival in the 2016 presidential election, mocked the reported plan to engrave
Trump’s photo on the dollar bill.
“By the end of Trump’s term, it’ll be just enough to buy one
gallon of gas and a carton of eggs,” Clinton said in an X post.
The treasury spokesperson told CNN that Trump’s signature is
on the potential currency.
